The lead ingredient of importance is Turmeric (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory) which is activated with the presence of black pepper, which by itself is a bit strong. The heat of the pepper is very noticeable in the afterbite—fans of spicy foods should take note. And in spite of its undeniable presence marked so easily by its yellow color, turmeric doesn’t have much of a flavor profile to match the punch of its color. Or at least not to me. So I borrowed on flavor and paired cinnamon with cloves—a wild combo that is strong and dramatic. Not off-putting like how either of these two can be when they’re solo or overdone. Together they balance and light a low-grade torch that partners with the high beams of the black pepper.

Aside from all of the flavors, I dig the texture. It’s a bit softer than the others due to the greater presence of dates in the base recipe. All Spark Bites share about 90% of the same ingredients, but the recipes for each are all a little different. I went heavier with dates for the sake of their natural sweetness which helps blunt the heat of the pepper from black peppercorns and cayenne pepper—there’s just a pinch. Dates, dried cranberries, dried pineapple….just a little of the magic in the Turmeric Spark Bites.
